Lessons, In Hindsight

Today I am grateful for the graduation celebrations that we enjoyed with Sam and others over the weekend. They were small, but meaningful. I especially appreciate my sisters Zita and Ruth making the trip up to be with us Friday evening.

We are so grateful for the efforts of the school and community to give the Class of 2020 a special send off in recent weeks. None of these events and acknowledgements happen without plenty of time and effort given by many people. Thank you all!

The weather was beautiful on Friday and the rolling parade an enjoyable experience for Sam, Darcy, and I. I captured this photo of Sam as we drove to the high school for our alphabetical portion of the parade:

What was this experience like for Sam?  What will it feel like in the coming months and years when it is further behind him in the rearview mirror of his life? We have had many conversations over the last months and will continue them, but much of this is his story alone and it is still taking shape.

You don't fully understand it all yet Sam, but you handled yourself well in the face of disappointment and uncertainty. You kept a perspective of acceptance and forward-thinking hope. As a mother witnessing this, I am an emotional mix of heartened, sad, proud, and sentimental.

A graduation video has been compiled and there was also the senior slide show, messages from teachers, classmates, school and school board personnel. Here are some of the wise nuggets pulled from the words of people who all helped you as a student at HHS, either directly or indirectly.

*Always stay positive, like a proton.
*There is no growth without a fire.
*Keep painting and God bless.
*It just doesn’t matter.
*You will never get the chance to grow up with anyone ever again.
*Whether you get back on track or build a new track, both still came from the same station.
*Gold mines...we all have one. It is our job to mine it.
*Don’t think outside the box, just get rid of the box.

Community has so many meanings. So many communities within our community matter to you and support you Sam. For that, I am so grateful. Onward!
